Montrose is a suburb in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, 33 km east from Melbourne's central business district. Its Local Government Area is the Shire of Yarra Ranges. At the 2006 Census, Montrose had a population of 6464.

History


The Post Office opened on 17 December 1898.

Montrose used to have a museum of the Australian author, May Gibbs, who created the Gumnut Babies.

Montrose is situated at the foot of Mount Dandenong. Close to the Yarra Ranges, the Dandenong Ranges and the wineries of the Yarra Valley, it is a gateway to many tourist destinations, offering a variety of Bed and Breakfast venues for visitors.

Local churches, sporting clubs, schools and small shops surround the town centre, which hosts a weekend market.

Community Groups: Montrose & District Lions Club was formed in March 2006. Formal meetings are held monthly.

Education

Montrose Primary School (school number 2259), is one of two local Primary Schools that serves students in grades Prep - Year Six. The principal is Neil Pollard. Located on Leith Road, it was established in 1880. The second school being Billanook Primary School which was established in 1980 and is located on Sheffield Road. The school Principal is Julie Legione.
