The Basement Food Hub is a non-for-profit charity located in Lilydale. Run by local residents Jim and Kris Roche, The Basement Food Hub offers fresh food and grocery items to those whom are finding it tough to feed their families.
With support from the Turning Point Church Lilydale and Cranbourne plus four volunteers, they operate from a basement area located underneath Lilydale Subway each Monday from 9:30am-2:00pm.
Speaking with Kris recently, she explained “The food has been sourced predominantly by us, and now we are being blessed by a delivery every Saturday by OzHarvest. It can be anywhere from 1-3 tonnes of food items and we never know what we are going to receive. Any leftovers from Mondays are delivered to local non-for-profit shop and cafe ‘The Mustard Tree’, so nothing is wasted at all.”
Further assisting the community, The Basement Food Hub provides Lilydale West Primary School with a box of fruit each week so a bowl of fruit can be placed in each classroom. They also run a breakfast club at the school on Tuesday mornings, to ensure all kids have the opportunity to start the day with a full tummy.
“We have many clients and they are exceedingly grateful for what they receive. As one said last week, and I quote “You come in as a stranger and go out as a friend”. This really touched our hearts as we love being able to help others. Our clients come from across the Yarra Ranges and Maroondah areas which shows there is a great need for this service.”
On Monday 19th November Kris and Jim will assist Lilydale High School students in cooking and serving a Christmas lunch to 50 people, with the produce supplied by The Basement Food Hub and OzHarvest.
With the busy Christmas period just around the corner, many (families) can feel the financial strain of providing for their families. If you are able to volunteer some time, collect some donations or are a family needing assistance please reach out to The Basement Food Hub via [email protected] or access is through a gate next to Subway in Lilydale main street.
